Obituary of Mel Cohen

John M. "Mel" Cohen, age 73 of Idabel, OK passed away on Thursday, November 7, 2013 at his home. He was born on July 22, 1940 in Scottsdale, AZ, the son of John Woodrow Cohen and Linnie Pauline Ellis Cohen. Mel married his wife, Karen on October 27, 1964 in Reserve, NM. They had made their home in Idabel since 1995 moving from Scottsdale, AZ where they had lived for over 40 years. He was retired, Mel had operated his own business, A-American Sewer in Scottsdale for several years. Mel lived a very full life and had many talents and hobbies. Soon after moving to Idabel he joined the Bypass Church of Christ. He enjoyed golf and he and Karen joined the Idabel Country Club and they had many good times as well as meeting many new friends on the golf course. In his younger years he played football and basketball and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was also a certified pilot and did some skydiving. Mel was also a very talented artist and many of his paintings hang in his home today. Mel loved spending time with his wife Karen, his children and grandchildren as well as his other friends and family. He will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, James Cohen. Mel is survived by his wife of 49 years, Karen Cohen of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy and Jim Anderson of Phoenix, AZ and Michelle and Bo Turner of Scottsdale, AZ; a son, John Cohen Jr. of Holbrook, AZ; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; several; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 10, 2013 at the White Family Funeral Home in Idabel, OK. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November14, 2013 at the Messinger Indian School Mortuary in Scottsdale, AZ. A visitation will precede the service. Interment will follow at the Green Acres Cemetery.
