Obituary of Eva Jane DeWitt

Eva Jane DeWitt, age 97 of Idabel, OK passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at Idabel, OK. She was born in Idabel, OK on February 24, 1916 to Harvey and Lala Rowland. She graduated from Idabel Gray High School in 1933 and moved to Oklahoma City to work in the Oklahoma State Tax Commission. Mrs. DeWitt was proud to have been the first woman Marshall for the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals. She worked as a legal secretary in Idabel for many years. She married J.W. DeWitt in February of 1941 and they were soon separated as WWII began. They did not spend a wedding anniversary together for the next 5 years while her husband served on a U.S. Navy ship in the South Pacific. Mrs. DeWitt was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sisters Martha Ellen Mixon and Princess Taylor; and brothers, H.S. Rowland and Roy Rowland. She is survived by her son, John DeWitt and wife, Sheila; her daughter, Jane Wooten; grandchildren, Becky Stone, Dr. Craig Wooten and wife, Kris, Jill Wooten Witchey and husband, Ryan; and she was the proud great-grandmother of Ethan Stone, Chandler Wooten, Drew Wooten, Hadley Wooten, Ryan Witchey and Eva Jane Witchey. Mrs DeWitt will be fondly remembered for hard work ethic, fun-loving approach to life and the many sacrifices she unselfishly made for her children. How many times she was heard to say, "I am the happiest when I am doing something for someone else." A life well lived is remembered. Private family services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to the Idabel First United Methodist Church or the Idabel Public Library.
