Obituary of John F. Overbey

John Overbey, 91, of Haworth, OK passed away Thursday, March 1, 2012 at Texarkana. He was born September 8, 1920, the son of Frank and Maude Voyles Overbey. John worked in the CCC camps for many years. He was a World War II veteran. He served in the Pacific and saw ground combat duty at Iwo Jima. He married Edith McBrayer on December 3, 1945 in Idabel. They moved to Midwest City in 1950 and made their home there until 1978 when they moved back to Haworth. While in Midwest City he worked for the U.S. Civil Service at Tinker Air Force Base from which he retired. John and his wife Edith were foster parents to several children over the years. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, hunting, and and going to the senior citizen’s center for lunch. He was a member of the Haworth Missionary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Edith Overbey in 2008; a brother, Aubrey Overbey; and sisters, Pauline McBrayer, Savola Chambers and Juanita Porton. John is survived by a son, John M. Overbey of Crossett, Arkansas; daughters and son-in-law, Janice K. and Larry McCall of Maud, Oklahoma, and Kimberley Overbey of Haworth; grandchildren, Blake Overbey, Chad Overbey, and Jacob Overbey all of Crossett, Arkansas; a sister, Altha Mae Rice; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at the White Family Chapel in Idabel, OK with Bro. Jim Anderson officiating. Interment will follow in the Denison Cemetery.
