Obituary of Bill DeBerry

Billie Gaines DeBerry, age 85, of Idabel passed away on August 20, 2009 in Tulsa. He was born on April 3, 1924 in DePort, Texas to Dick and Abbie DeBerry. Bill grew up in Bogata, Texas and later graduated from Idabel Gray High School. In 1941 he enlisted in the Army Air Corp. and served as an airplane mechanic in the Philippines and constructed airfields in New Guinea and the Philippines during World War II. After returning home from the service he attended the University of Oklahoma on a track scholarship. Bill returned to Idabel where he farmed along with his father and brother Tom. In 1980 he was named “Farmer of the Year” by the Idabel Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Idabel. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife Lynn DeBerry. Bill is survived by his wife Verna of the home; daughters, Sherri DeBerry of Ft. Worth, TX, Susie DeBerry of Tulsa, Jill and husband Steve Miller of Tulsa; grandchildren, Paige and Layne Miller of Tulsa; and a brother, Tom DeBerry of Idabel; numerous other relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers, family requests memorials to the American Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.
