Obituary of Jacklyn Horn

Jacklyn Guest Horn, 65, longtime educator and school counselor passed away on Thursday, August 7, 2008 at her home in Tom, OK surrounded by her family. Born October 9, 1942, in Paris, TX, Jacklyn grew up in Valliant where she graduated from high school in 1960 before attending Southeastern Oklahoma State University. From SOSU, she earned both her B.S. and masters in education. Her passion for teaching young children, led her to her first teaching position at John Glenn Elementary in the Western Heights School District where she taught 1st grade. Following her time at John Glenn, Jacklyn also taught 1st grade at Mustang Elementary in Mustang, OK. In 1972, the family moved to southeastern Oklahoma where Jacklyn began teaching at Haworth Elementary. For eighteen years at Haworth Elementary, Jacklyn taught 1st grade, 3rd grade, and concluded her time at Haworth as the elementary guidance counselor. While elementary counselor, she was instrumental in assisting with the development of McCARE, a county-wide drug free program. Additionally, her elementary counseling program expanded the Red Ribbon campaign that began during the 1980s. Early in Jacklyn’s counseling career, she helped to develop a tri-school career day for elementary students and a county-wide curriculum contest also for elementary students. In 1990, Jacklyn and her family moved to Tupelo, OK where she assumed the position of elementary principal and counselor. After 30 years as an educator, counselor, and administrator, Jacklyn retired in 1993. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Jacklyn was an active member of the Tom Baptist Church for 35 years. For the church, Jacklyn served as the church clerk, treasurer, choir member, preschool teacher, Vacation Bible School director, and Deacon’s wife. Jacklyn loved to china paint, play the piano, collect antiques, and spending time with her family. Jacklyn leaves behind a legacy of passion for education and service to the community. Her friends and co-workers will remember her as a compassionate, resilient person with creative vision. One of Jacklyn’s closest friends suggested that “loyalty” was one of her greatest qualities. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Pauline Guest Jacklyn is survived by her husband of 45 years, Herman Horn of Tom, OK; her sister and brother-in-law Carolyn and Ralph Cury of Mustang; a son and daughter-in-law Scott and Alicia Horn of Sawyer; a son and daughter-in-law Brian and Lisa Horn of Frisco, TX; a daughter and son-in-law Jill and Brian Bobier of Surprise, AZ; two grandchildren, Megan Horn of Sawyer and Jaxon Horn of Frisco; a niece Kelli Harmon and husband Randy of Mustang, and a great-niece Keila Harmon and a great-nephew Braden Harmon of Mustang.
